CROATIE : UNE DYNAMIQUE EN MOUVEMENT

Small country, long history, central position, strategic platform and meeting point.

Croatia surface is about 56.000 km2 with a long coast on the Adriatic Sea (nearly 5.000 km long). Its total population is slightly over 4.5 millions with a large proportion of under 25 years old.

The capital is Zagreb with over 800.000 inhabitants and the next city by its size, Split, has nearly 400.000 inhabitants. All other regional cities are under 200.000 inhabitants (Rijeka, Osijek, Karlovac, Dubrovnik…).

A population equally dispersed over land.

The inland, Slavony on the east, and Krajina in the center is a highly agricultural region with plenty of rivers, flat lands and rich earth for plantations and farms. Slavony has a diversified production with intensive culture for wheat and corn. On the Coast, agricultural production is concentrated on fruits (citrus), vine, olive and mineral water.

Agriculture near from nature and with a strong traditional know how.

Traditional industries are chemical, mechanical, metallurgy and shipyard. Most of them are located in the center and on the coast. Recent installations of terminals oil pipeline coming from the East have developed petrochemicals and petrol transformation. These industries are well connected with the different universities, thus making it easy to maintain a high technical level.

Strong industrial back ground in different areas.

Tourism is of the utmost importance for the Croatian economy. Services represent 75% of the PIB and Tourism 17%. There is over 7 millions of tourists coming every year, mainly during summer time. Tourist infrastructure goes from international 5 stars hotels on the coast to bed and breakfast inland

Strong impact on foreign countries from tourism.

Since 1979, UNESCO has selected 6 places in Croatia that belong to the World Heritage (UNESCO World Heritage) :

  1. Sibenik and its cathedral
  2. The old town of Dubrovnik,
  3. Porec basilica,
  4. The medieval town of Trogir,
  5. The national park of Plitvice,
  6. The Diocletian palace of Split.

Places like Dubrovnik or Pula, despite their medium size, are internationally known for their Festivals and Cultural activities.

Intensive cultural and artistic activities with an international audience.

Since 2005, Croatia is in negotiation for joining European Union ant it is planning to enter the European Community by late 2012.

Its geographical position at the center of the Mediterranean sea is opening knew opportunities such as :

  • cost environmental planning,
  • sea natural resources management (fishery, aquaculture),
  • shipping logistic and international trading,
  • others…
